Mobile application research firm Flurry is reporting an estimate of over 1.2 billion apps downloaded over the holidays (December 25-31, 2011). That is a 60% increase over the standard 750k apps that are downloaded each week. The boom in downloads can partially be attributed to the nearly 7 million Android and iPhones that were activated on Christmas Day. Flurry is also reporting that this is the first time that the billion download mark was surpassed for a single week.

A couple other interesting statistics from the holiday season include:

  • 242 million mobile application downloads on Christmas Day.
  • The United States accounted for nearly half the downloads during the holidays with 509 million, followed by China with 99 million and the United Kingdom with 81 million.
