Hold on people, we're not saying they're better than Facebook, we're just saying these social media communities had impressive years in 2011. Facebook is still the leading social media community, but according to comScore's 2011
Social Report, 2011 saw Twitter, Tumblr, and Pinterest have big years.
Twitter saw its users go from just over 100 million to just under 170 millon in 12months. Part of that success is attributed to Twitter's integration with
iOS5, which Twitter reports lead to a 25% increase in sign-ups. The report also showed that Twitter is receiving 35.5 million monthly visitors, up from the 20-25 million at the start of the year.
Tumblr experienced a growth this year as well as it was reported that they went from 7 million unique visitors in the United States to 16 million in 12 months. Their new traffic worldwide was just as pronounced as it went from 18.6 million unique visitors to 44 million in the same time period.
Pinterest also experienced exponential growth this year, starting off at around a million users, comScore's report showed over 6 million users, an increase of 5 million in just 12 months.
Sharing of ideas and personal expression through micro-blogging or communities like Tumblr is growing exponentially. So much so, that you have seen Facebook roll out its "Subscription" feature in an attempt to counter the loss of sharing activity to other social communities. It will be interesting to see whether Facebook's "Subscriptions" will gain traction in 2012 or communities like Pinterest will continue to grow.
What do you think of the growth of sharing/micro-blogging communities? Does this mean Facebook is not giving users what they need? Tweet us @jasegroup and let us know what you think.
