Twitter is expected to become a de facto communication source for nearly all the world’s leaders in 2013, according to Omar Hijazi, managing partner to Digital Daya. In a recent study released by Digital Daya, the Digital Policy Council found 75 percent of the world’s heads of state are now on Twitter. The study surveyed the social networking status of 164 countries and found that 123 world leaders had a Twitter presence. In comparison, in 2011 only 69 countries had world leaders with Twitter accounts. President Obama, @barackobama, was found to be the most popular world leader with 25 million Twitter followers. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, @chavezcandanga, followed in second place with over 3.5 million Twitter followers.
From a business perspective as CEOs realize the importance of sharing their organization’s message and connecting with their business’s target audience and clients, 2013 will probably see in an increase in business leader Twitter use, as well. CEO’s and highly-skilled executives that have found success via the social media platform use their accounts as vehicles to share insightful articles, video clips, and other industry-related media that they find interesting.
