2012 is here and with it will come some foundation changing ways in which we gather information on the internet and consequentially how businesses must adapt their marketing strategies to effectively stay in the race. This is not a bubble or a fad, this is life altering changes to technology and how we interact with it.
Search engines are evolving, we have seen just the tip of the iceberg in the last year with the introduction of Google’s Panda Algorithm. Search engines are being trained to interpret more effectively what the user wants, the data the search engine perceives as important, and the data we the users perceive as important.
I think this is just the beginning of a new age of information. Its effect on marketing is that this new digital world must be considered carefully by all businesses. The success of multiple new social communities like Google+ and Pinterest (who is poised to have a breakout 2012) has led to the incorporation of social signal as a ranking factor in SERP. Combine the influence of social signal on SERP with the new patent that Google acquired at the end of 2011 for “Semantic Social Networks” and social media is poised to play a larger role than ever before in inbound marketing.
At this point there is no way to know if or when Google will incorporate semantic social networks into Google+ or what other technology lies in store for the future of search. But in 2012 can your business afford to stand idly by and wait for the life raft to come along? A business must be consistently creating quality organic content and cultivating relationships with its consumers in their social networks to increase the share-ability of its content to be effective in today’s online marketing. A business must be effectively fusing the strategies of traditional marketing principles and today’s leading edge inbound marketing techniques to target their consumers and generate leads. The days of just having a website in the digital world are no longer productive.
