Today is the 3rd annual 4sqDay on Foursquare. Users who check-in today will receive the 4sqDay badge on their accounts to commemorate the occasion.

Foursquare day started back in 2010 when Nate Bonilla-Watford, an optometrist from Tampa, Florida, was thinking of creative ways to use Foursquare for his business. He came up with a date for the celebration of 4/16; since 16 is 4 squared and his plan to celebrate was to organize a meet up at various businesses throughout Tampa. The idea grew in popularity as more and more people learned of the celebration. Foursquare caught wind of the plans and decided to help out by creating a badge to be received by those who checked-in on Foursquare Day.

Today, Foursquare offers to send party packs to those who organize Foursquare Day events and for 4sgDay 2012, will even have some staff members attending these events around the world.

Foursquare’s message to its 4sqDay badge recipients:

“In 2010, foursquare fans declared April 16 4sqDay (4/4^2 – nerds after our own heart!). Two years and two billion check-ins later, you’re still why we get out of bed each day. Thanks to all 20 million of you for making us part of your lives. Happy 4sqDay! “

With 20 million users and over 2 billion check-ins, Foursquare definitely has reason to celebrate. They are still going strong and adding new users daily. Many businesses have begun to capitalize on the power of Foursquare in their social media marketing.
